Taking Back SATurdays--- College-Readiness Exams, 12/30/2015

If you want to make money in education… start a standardized testing company.  Standardized testing is the greatest education hustle since malfunctioning copy machines.

I woke up the other morning to an article from the Washington Post:  “The SAT, now the No. 2college test, pushesto reclaim supremacy”. Check out some of these awesome excerpts:

“The SAT, once the nation’s dominant college admission exam, fell behind the ACT in recent years after its rival locked up huge swaths of the market…”
“Now the SAT’s owner, the College Board, has mounted a comeback in its bid to regain supremacy…”
“The competition between the ACT and SAT…”
“After the SAT’s last revision, in 2005, which added a required writing assessment, it lost market share…”
“…state officials had decided to drop free ACT testing for high school juniors and instead give 11th-graders the SAT under a three-year contract worth $14.3 million…”
…’Dominant’?  ‘Rival’?  ‘Comeback’?  ‘Supremacy’?  ‘Competition’?  ‘Market share’?  ‘14.3 MILLION’?

I would just like to take a moment to say:  Nick Anderson, I don’t know you, but I freaking LOVE you for writing that article.  Don’t worry, you didn’t do anything wrong; you just provided us with something to chew on.  Ladies and gentlemen, how would you feel if you learned that the tests you and your children so regard are more concerned with competition for lucrative contracts… than with enhancing the educational process?  When you think about testing, you think about data and diagnostics, right?  But what if the primary ‘D’ word that these companies are concerned with… is DOLLARS.

…Think I’m exaggerating?  Fair enough; I hope I am.  Keep reading.

The first time I questioned the role of standardized testing companies  in education was my high school junior year, back in 1999-2000.  My mother, who was an educator, told me that the board of education was introducing test prep classes, and students were taking them to boost their test scores (I think she was nudging me to try to surpass my own score, which wasn’t half bad, btw).  I was puzzled.  “So, if the students are getting assistance before they take the test, then… *light bulb* what is the test actually measuring?  Isn’t that like attempting to measure one’s vertical with stilts on?”

Sure, it’s not the testing companies’ faults that students were finding themselves in need of assistance; heck, many of the students didn’t really need assistance to pass, they just needed assistance to pass with flying colors--- to go from appearing college-ready to appearing to be Ivy League material (keyword ‘appearing’).  But that’s when I saw… the test prep books.  “From the makers of the [insert name of standardized test here]…”

Timeout!!  So, they make a test that measures 'college-readiness', then, when students don’t make the score that they wish to make, they print and sell materials to help the students boost their test presence.  And I say “boost their test presence”, for two reasons:  1) because the materials aren’t about subject mastery, they’re about test mastery; 2) because the students aren’t testing to demonstrate their college-readiness, they’re testing to generate college-readiness scores, whether they’re actually college-ready or not.  At the end of all things, the testing companies make money hand-over-fist--- on one end from signing million-dollar contracts, on the other end from selling study materials.

…What a HUSTLE!  Well-played!

And yet, tests like the SAT are found to be lacking, constantly needing to be adjusted.  The SAT started off on a 1600 point scale, then went to 2400, and now it’s back to 1600.  It started off with math and verbal, then it added writing, and now it’s cutting back on the verbal.  It started off as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and then it became the Scholastic… [Something-Else] Test, I’m too lazy to look it up right now.  We talk about these college-readiness tests as if they’re some kinda learning essentials, or infallible measuring tools, or sacred monuments in the Temple of Education… but they’re not.  If they were being used as diagnostic tools, then when substantial numbers of students found themselves lacking, the test-makers’ concern wouldn’t be selling study materials for the tests; it would be helping schools create more effective classrooms.  Their concern would be investing in the schools themselves to help improve the classroom experience so that students wouldn’t need test-prep classes or test-mastery materials.  There’s a difference between raising intelligence and raising test scores.

I say all this to pose a question:  are standardized tests like the SAT and ACT really fit for determining college-readiness?  Near the end of Anderson’s article he quotes Governor Jack Markell as saying, “Even though people are getting sick of tests, they are desperate for opportunity.”  Perhaps that’s the problem--- why are tests like these so directly connected to opportunity?  According to CollegeAtlas.Org, 70% ofAmericans will attend a 4-year college, and of that 70%, less than 2/3 willgraduate.  How many of that 2/3 were required to take tests like the SAT as a key to college entry?  Is 2/3’s not a majority?  How does an effective standardized test result in a majority of 4-year college students turning out not to be college material?

Don’t get me wrong, I think tests have their place--- as diagnostic tools to help measure student growth and target student learning.  But as barriers to college entry?  Barriers that don’t even filter the 2/3’s of the 4-year college students who don’t graduate?  I say give those high school students their Saturdays* back and find a better way to spend $14 million.

*Not sure how it is across the country, but where I'm from students normally take college-readiness exams on Saturdays.

New Music --- 'All The Dough' by NoTiQ feat. B.Ware & Zewdy (Produced by Siiren), 12/24/2015

It’s Christmas Eve, and I’m sitting here watching a documentary about FreakNik.  …Yeah, I know; be like that sometimes.  Blame this hot weather and these thunderstorms rolling through the Southeast; also blame DJ Kizzy Rock, I follow him on Facebook, peeped game straight from his page.  ¯\_()_/¯

Left to Right: B.Ware, Zewdy, and NoTiQ
Speaking of Atlanta tho, I mentioned to ya’ll a few times here and there that my younger sib Siiren was around the A-Town working out some things on the beats and production side of the game.  She put me on to some up-and-coming area talent:  rappers NoTiQ & B.Ware and the Ethiopian songstress Zewdy Awalom (and all her beautiful hair).

Welp, good news!  The bringing together of those four musical elements has yielded fruit in the form of a new single by NoTiQ.  The cut, entitled ‘All the Dough’, was recently debuted on Ridin’ Dirty Radio and features B.Ware & Zewdy with Siiren on the instrumental.  Peep peep:

BEHOLD!!--- 'The Return of the Invisible Man' EP by EJ Tha Witchdoctor, 12/23/2015

They say that Hip Hop is a young man’s game.  …I don’t believe that.  That’s industry talk; the kinda talk that comes from one who’s disconnected from the art form.  That’s like saying Pai Mei the White Rabbit has no place in kung fu.
Just like kung fu, Hip Hop is a people’s legacy, a people’s story, and a people’s culture-- and Hip Hop needs its drunken masters.

I say all that to say this: on December 31st, stay tuned as one of Hip Hop’s drunken masters returns from obscurity. I’m speaking of none other than Atlanta’s own--- the Dungeon Family’s own--- EJ tha Witchdoctor!  Direct from the source, he will be releasing a new album entitled Tristmas Island.  How’s THAT for a way to close out 2015 and crank up 2016?

A Christmas Freaking Anthem: ‘#1HAPPYHOLIDAY’ by D.R.A.M., 12/22/2015

Before I start, I’m gonna talk crazy:  this is the best Christmas song I’ve heard since… Donnie Hathaway’s “This Christmas”.  I couldn't tell if D.R.A.M. could really sing or not at first, but this song confirms--- he can sing so well that he can have a good time while doing it.

So, story time. I know a lovely couple up in Baltimore; we all went to high school together so we keep in touch.  One day I get a video in my Facebook inbox--- it was “I Like to Cha Cha” by D.R.A.M.  In short, I was brainwashed that day (thanks a lot Sis >:-| )  In fact, I was brainwashed to the point that I was kinda bummed about that whole “Hotline Bling” thing.  But that's another day's journey.

The Experienced Listener Say, “PLAY THE D*MN SONG!”, 12/22/2015

So I’m sitting in my car the other day listening to the local old school and R&B station--- not the new one that plays old school Hip Hop, one of the other two anti-rap stations.  One of my favorite songs from the 2000s comes on:  “Love of My Life” by Erykah Badu, featuring the world renowned word poet formerly-known as Common Sense.

New Video --- 'UTI' by John Bussie, 8/12/2015

That moment when the video's so dope it makes you revisit the song...

Glad to say, John Bussie is still at it, blessing us with singles and videos here and there.  Got a whiff of this one today and it smelled right nice!  Simple visual concept, but crisp footage shot between Bussie and area favorite Travoris Hawkins. And of course it features dope #BARS over a sweet instrumental in traditional Bussie style.  If you haven't heard from the brotha in a minute, this is a good time to jump back on.  Young Scholar is still lurking...

As an Augusta native, I just gotta say I'm proud to see all this talent dropping banger after banger.  Pretty soon, Augusta represents will be all the music I need for my playlist, lol

Enjoy

New Video --- 'What Dey Mad Fo'/Historic Black Jails' by Truez, 8/11/2015

"For such a time as this..."

Recently I had the pleasure of being part of a video shoot for Augusta favorite Truez.  The GT Films video is a medley of two of his new singles, What Dey Mad Fo' and Historical Black Jails featuring Stratuzy.  The video was shot in a variety of locations, key of which was Minnick Park, a spot very familiar to Augusta residents.

I loved being a part of this shoot because the song and video content was extremely relevant to our situation particularly as Black people in an America full of reemerging racial tension.  In light of police brutality, racial extremists, hate crimes, and media propagandizing, I love that this video doesn't dance around this moment in our nation.

If you look closely, you'll see a lot of Augusta-area talents making appearances all throughout the video, including the likes of Truez's artist Kumar and fellow MC Stratuzy, who's featured on Historical Black Jails.  Take a peek, keep an open mind, and please share!  And yeah, if you look hard enough, you'll see a little E.G.S. in the mix as well, doing some Where's Waldo-isms, lol

Enjoy

Why Education Requires Faith, 7/29/2015

Ladies and gentlemen, Faith Evans.  Isn't she lovely...

So some time ago they took prayer out of schools.  ...Wouldn't be such a big deal if children were being taught to pray at home... *sips tea* ...but that's another day's journey.  And of course, we're not allowed to teach the Bible in our schools.  At least, not for spiritual purposes; it is, however, still considered historical source material, so it can be referenced in that capacity.  ...Kinda like any history textbook.  And it was in the midst of this discussion some years ago that I had an epiphany:  education at ANY level requires faith; faith and education can't be separated.

New Music --- 'Organized Money' by Earl Grey Summers, 7/27/2015

(A  P N C L B R K R  E X C L U S I V E !!!...)

When it comes to education, this is my favorite way to teach--- through music.  Check out my new single, Organized Money.

I wrote this tune to help Black people to understand that if we want change, we have to be responsible about our spending.  Marching and protesting is fine, but historically what the Establishment truly responds to is money.  And while organizing boycotts is a familiar tactic amongst Black activists, a tactic that isn't used quite as frequently or efficiently as it should be is organized spending--- taking the money that we withdraw through boycott, and redirecting it into Black-owned businesses and Black commerce.  It's not just about withholding our money from select establishments; it's about investing that money into our OWN establishments.

Give it a listen and tell me whatcha think.  If you like it, I strongly urge you to purchase the single (it's only a dollar, c'mon) and then share it with your peeps.  I love feedback!  And I love ya'll--- Black or otherwise.

New Video --- 'My Life' by E.J. tha Witchdoctor, 7/25/2015

I'm doing this one for my true, true Dirty South heads--- the ones who get uptight and feel some kinda way when I say, "Every day is a holidaaay!!"  Ya'll know I'm Dungeon Family bred going waaaay back to the early 90's, and there was always one member of the DF who was as mysterious and beyond comprehension as Donald Trump's voting bloc.  And that brotha was E.J. tha Witchdoctor.

People always ask me, "Whatever happened to EJ?"--- as if I'm a member of the DF and would know sensitive information such as that, right?  Funny thing is... I do kinda keep in contact with the brotha; matta of fact, within the past two years or so, I actually purchased his latest CD directly from him, complete with the smell of incense upon opening the envelope, lol

Well, recently EJ hit me up and put me up on his latest single, My Life.  And while I was listening I had an alphabetical epiphany--- EJ is the ODB of the DF.

New Music --- 'Dreaming' & 'Black Man Down' by Prosperer, 7/21/2015

Ya know, in 2015 everybody and they momma can rhyme.   Ever since the advent of YouTube, it really doesn’t take much to get on but a gimmick and a following in a world full of followers.  So cats come at me all the time telling me they can spit.  But I wanna talk about this one cat in particular…

He’s a former student of mine via two schools.  As in, I was at one school and he was there, and then I ended up at another school… and he ended up there too, lol.  I knew he was sharp, but I didn’t know how sharp until we started choppin it up about music.

New Music --- Truez feat. Stratuzy, ‘Historic Black Jails’, 7/20/2015

Augusta, I’m getting more and more proud of you!  So just a few ticks ago, I introduced you to Augusta artist Stratuzy, and before that I’ve been on my due diligence keeping you abreast of Augusta artist Truez.  Two brilliant minds, great minds think alike… long story short, they got together for a collab track like they should!

I’m pissed at myself because I actually had a chance to peep this a few weeks ago when I was in the studio with Truez, Aaron Grossman, Kumar, and AE.  But me being always on the go, I missed out on the sneak preview, and it came back to BITE me!  …I’m LOVING this cut.

New Music --- Check Out 'Midnight' by Stratuzy, 7/20/2015

So yesterday I’m out at the video shoot for the latest release by Augusta-based artist Truez What They Mad For  (article and images pending).  While I’m waiting for things to get started, I come across a familiar set of dreadlocks from my various stints as a teacher--- a young brotha named Stratuzy who used to sit in my class and underachieve with the best of ‘em, lol.  Back then, he was one of those brilliant guys who knows he could be doing greater things; turns out one of those greater things is spitting enlightenment over instrumentals.  I’m glad to see he’s linked up with the right people, messing with #TRUEZNATION--- and I’m excited to say that they’ve JUST RELEASED a collaboration that will be coming to PNCLBRKR.com as soon as I can get it here!

Meantime, I wanted to share this cut with you good people so that you can get a feel for this young brotha.  A track called Midnight from his up-and-coming project,  Everything And Then Some.  A very insightful piece produced by Tokimonsta.  Like I said, the young man's been brilliant since I've known him, so pay attention to the #BARS on this one.  Enjoy the cut, feel free to leave feedback, and stay tuned for more from the Dreaded Young Wonder.  And like I said, the new Truez track featuring Stratuzy is comin’ right up!

Be sure to check out Stratuzy's YouTube Channel for more releases as they come:  https://www.youtube.com/user/Stratuzy

Hephzibah’s Civil War: The Union of Education vs. The Confederacy of Ignorance, 7/16/15

Normally when you pick a school mascot, you pick something that the student body can rally behind.  And the students of Hephzibah High School and Hephzibah Middle School rally behind… a Confederacy Rebel.  Now, the good news is that right now literacy and history are two of the weakest points in grade school academia, at least in the Southeast.  It stands to reason that, if you don’t read well, you’ll shy away from doing much in-depth historical study, and perhaps lack interest in history altogether.  So when you ask many kids if they know the significance and the historical context of the Rebel mascot… they have no freaking idea what you’re talking about.  Thus, thanks to their acute lack of knowledge, they’re not offended by the mascot.

…Remember, that’s the good news.

The Experienced Listener Says, “Let Us Carve OutKast into Stone Mountain!!!”

I’m proud to be from the South.  …Until I’m reminded how ssstupid people from the South can be.  Could you imagine going up to a Jewish person and saying, “Hey, the Final Solution wasn’t really about killing all the Jews; it was about promoting German nationalism and Aryan solidarity!”  Or, “Hey, Gen. Erwin Rommell may have worked for Hitler, but he wasn’t as bad as Hitler, so it’s okay to honor some Nazis!”  Or, “The Egyptians and Babylonians enslaved and killed Jews too; why aren’t you condemning them the way you’re condemning the Nazis?”

Well, that’s the level of ssstupid ya gotta deal with if you’re a Black person living in the South right now.  Because folks everywhere are trying their BESTS to minimize any connection between the Confederacy and slavery to justify honoring and upholding Confederate symbolism and memorabilia.

“It’s about heritage, not hate.”
“It’s about states’ rights, not slavery.”
“It’s about southern pride.”
“Northerners had slaves too.”

…Maybe we’d know Northerners had slaves too if history books weren’t so busy protecting the “more patriotic” images of America’s forefathers, but that’s another day’s top---where the HAIL is that green FROG with my LIPTON!!

Fresco Presents: 'Art Lives - Atlanta 2 Augusta', 7/11/15

“To inspire…”  That’s all I kept hearing yesterday at Fresco’s “Art Lives – Atlanta 2 Augusta” exhibition.
As I interviewed talent after talent, personality after personality the same phraseology.  “I do what I do to inspire...”  “We’re here to inspire…”  “Any time I have an opportunity to inspire…”  “The purpose of this event is to inspire…”

Well, it worked, datgommit.  I was inspired.  In fact, I was inspired for the THIRD time in that building.

So this is what went down:  a crew from Atlanta known as the Good Juice Family came all the way down to Augusta to share their graphic artistry.  Featuring artists Fake Savian, Travis Love, and Elev8ted USC, the gallery ranged from massive anime paintings to cyber-punk skateboard art to slick photography.

Ending Mass Incarceration: Are We Prepared? 7/7/2015

Recently it has been reported that President Obama intends to commute the sentences of 80 people who have been incarcerated on nonviolent drug charges.  Kudos, kinda--- as Dr. Boyce Watkins recently put it, “What about the other 30,000?”  But perhaps it’s good that the other 30,000 haven’t been commuted yet.  Why?  Because, frankly, we haven’t prepared ourselves for it.

True3nough: An Interview with Truez (PNCLBRKR Exclusive)

Before Augusta-based artist Truez released his latest album to date, True3nough, I had the pleasure of being one of the first to sneak-preview the project. Along with a private listening session, I also got to interview Truez about… Truez.  There’s a lot to this young man; so much in fact that DJ Kay Slay--- one of the most notoriously hard-nosed Hip Hop personalities--- took interest and signed him to a record deal.  I’ve been assured from manager Aaron Grossman that great things are in the works and we should look forward to whatever Truez and Kay Slay have brewing; in the meantime, enjoy this interview and get to know the man behind the music.  Augusta, you’d better embrace your own; apparently New York and Atlanta already have.

Catch up and keep up with Truez's music at www.TruezMusic.com

A Night at Fresco: The Last Cypher, Pt. II, 7/3/2015

So the night of the cypher comes.  I’d spent all day thinking about what verse or verses I would perform; I’m a beast with the pencil, but I don't do a lot of MCing nowadays so I'm rusty.
My homeboy James Makin agrees to meet me down there for a lil camera work in case I’m too busy grippin the mic.  Doors open at 8:00; I get there about 8:15 (CPT).  Even with the sun down it’s hot; air’s humid, but sky’s mostly clear.  Libra’s in the lobby with her people waiting for the DJ to show.  Slowly but surely MCs and spectators start showing up, mostly standing in front of the store.  Truez walks in and we catch up; it’s our first time connecting since the release of his Tru3nough album.  I think it was about 9:00 when Libra finally rallied everybody inside and we all circled up.

When you hear somebody say, “There’s nothing to do in Augusta”--- that means they’ve never been to Fresco on First Friday.

A Night at Fresco: The Last Cypher, Pt. I, 7/3/2015

fresco--- n.  a watercolor painting done on wet plaster which bonds to the paint surface once dried.

This… is the best week I’ve had in a long, LONG time.  A few days ago I actually came outside and I was blessed to meet Libra Miller, owner of a soon-to-be-well-known hotspot called Fresco in Downtown Augusta.  Located at 224 8th Street, Fresco is a Men’s Boutique that sells hard-to-find and exclusive clothing, shoes, vinyl records, CDs, art; it’s the kinda place you go to soak up Hip Hop culture in a low-key setting.

…But you know me, I’m broke.  I ain’t come out to buy, I came out to talk, lol.

So down the stairs comes Libra (which kinda scared me cuz I didn’t even SEE the upstairs when I walked in).  I’m not sure who told her about me or what they said, but it didn’t take long for me to see she and I were on the same page.

The Experienced Listener Says, “Rihanna is a Disco Queen”

I pride myself on being able to find the right words in any situation.  *cough* *cough* ...My bad; throat kinda dry.  Anyway, when Rihanna first came out, I didn’t know WHAT to think; thus I didn’t know what to say about her.

“Pon De Replay” had me thinking she was another Disney-pop phenom, but with a little more… ‘goodness gracious’ in her hips.   And green eyes that would Shang Tsung my soul if I looked too long.

The Experienced Listener--- "What I've Learned About Beatmaking"

I am in awe of my baby sister.  Keep your ears out for her; she goes by Siiren and she’s no joke.  She recently sent me just a rough cut of a beat she did for a track featuring Atlanta MCs Notiq and B.Ware and vocalist Zewdy (and all of her gorgeous hair).  In short, I couldn’t be more proud; Siiren’s a beast.  We’ve kinda had this ongoing beat battle in the house for years, and she’s definitely winning right now...

So yeah--- in my spare time, I’m a beatmaker myself; I got my first drum machine from my cousin Andre Ellis around 1998, got into Fruity Loops a few years down the road. I don’t have a knack for it the way my sister does (she was already a dope instrumentalist before she ever touched a beat program), but I can put it down in my own experimental, trial-and-error way.

Yo! The Series Finale of The Boondocks was #SNAPPIN

Okay, so Season 4 of The Boondocks was overall weak; I was upset when I heard Aaron McGruder had sold the rights to it and I was just about ready to #SNAP over it.  But I was a trooper--- I stuck with the show up to the final episode, entitled “The New Black”.

…I don’t know if I’m doing Aaron McGruder a favor or a greeeeaaat disservice by bringing this episode up.

An E.G.S. #SPECIALREQUEST: Keyshia Cole Should Cover Evelyn Champagne King

As a self-proclaimed music aficionado, sometimes I get ideas.  I think like a producer, so every now and then I hear an artist at work and think to myself, "It would be so dope if..."  And through blogging, I found out that sometimes, if I just throw an idea out into the atmosphere, it actually comes into being--- sometimes in ways I never expected.  So what the hay; I've got an idea.

My first "brilliant idea" of many to come is surrounding a certain Keyshia Cole...

Flash Kicks SUCK: The Hard Transition, 5/25/2015

Okay, I’m old school--- my instinct is to shoot down all incoming bogeys with Guile’s flash kick, period.  That’s just how I always did things.  And it’s not that I didn’t know about things like his crouching uppercut, I just always used them differently in the II series.  For instance, my favorite thing to do was to go from the crouching HP (I called it the Statue of Liberty Uppercut) right into his heavy Flash Kick.  Nothing like a good two piece, plus it just looked cool.

Anyway, as I got into the IV series, for the first time it dawned on me:  flash kicks suck.

Learning Essentials as... Non-Essentials, 5/23/2015

What does it take to receive a first rate education?  Smart Boards? Online learning?  Laptops for every student?  Sure, these things can help the learning process, I won’t dispute that.  However, effective learning did not start with 21st Century technology, nor do I believe I should end with 21st Century technology.

Standardized Testing: Turning Courses into Obstacles

Recently in Georgia, Governor Nathan Deal signed a waiver so that thousands of high school students could get their high school diplomas in spite of not completing their graduation tests.  Talk to many of these students and you find that they’re capable, intelligent people; they could probably tell you mounds of things that they’ve learned over the course of grade school.  It’s just that, when it came to a particular graduation test covering a particular data set, they weren’t able to jump through the hoop.

#ORGANIZEBALTIMORE or #MORERIOTS

Marilyn Mosby.  Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.  Caesar R. Goodson Jr.  Garrett E. Miller. Edward M. Nero.  William G. Porter.  Brian W. Rice.  Alicia D. White.  …These are the names you need to be familiar with surrounding the killing of Freddie Gray and pending federal investigation of the Baltimore PD.

So you’re probably wondering why an educator would bring up such a nasty incident of police brutality and subsequent rioting on a blog about education, music, and gaming.  Well, maybe it’s a music thing:  the legendary Prince is releasing a new song and holding a peace rally in Baltimore on May 10th--- my birthday!! :-D

…Nah, that’s not the reason I’m writing this.  Would’ve been a good excuse, though :-\

Dr. King as a Mild Sedative in the Classroom (No School Nurse Needed)

…I’ve always known we’ve done a poor job of teaching Black history, but as of the last few days it’s so clear to me why history classrooms reference Dr. Martin Luther King almost as if he’s the only significant civil rights activist.  It’s not because of his effectiveness; truthfully speaking, if we wanna talk about effectiveness, we’d do better to talk about the brilliant organizer A. Philip Randolph who, behind the scenes, made that fateful marching day and so many others possible.  Or, we’d talk more about Thurgood Marshall, who won the cases and made the rulings that secured our futures on paper and not just in romantic demonstrations.

Nope.  We don’t teach Dr. King because of his effectiveness; we teach Dr. King because it’s our way of protecting the status quo.  Our way of reminding the actors in the civil rights stage play of their ‘proper roles’.  “Okay, this is our routine, guys:  we do the brutalizing, and you sit there and take it and catch us on camera, then you give the powerful speech, and that’ll bring the change.”

“Patriotic” Education: UNpatriotic and UNeducational, 4/25/2015

Ask yourself a question:  do you love your country, or do you just love the makeup your country wears?  Do you love “Good Morning, America”--- with all of her bad breath and plaque and body odor and bed hair--- or do you just love “America, the Beautiful” after she’s been sanitized and dressed in designer fabric?
In light of all this Valdosta flag-stomping controversy, I thought this would be a good time to address false patriotism--- in education.

"Bad Apple Trees" Are Ruining Our Schools, 4/18/2015

It stands to reason that, if “a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch” and “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, then we should be concerned not with the bad apples, but with the bad apple treesGood parents beware: bad parenting hurts our schools far more than bad students

Daredevils of Education: A Call to Action, 4/13/2015

marvel_s_daredevil___netflix_banner__by_zedkate-d82iuegOn April 10th, Netflix made Marvel’s Daredevil series available for streaming.  As a long-time Marvel fan, I barricaded myself indoors for the weekend and partook.  By episode 7 I was much impressed; so much so that it inspired me to write.  I realized, watching “The Man with No Fear”, that fear is exactly what’s being used to keep educators from saving education.  I hope that this entry will be a shot of courage to whoever reads it…

No Slavery in the Classroom? Try the Xbox…

medal-of-honor-heroesAs a high school history teacher, there have been several moments where I was teaching about a particular subject--- World War II, for instance--- and a student would raise their hand and say, “Oh yeah!  I saw that plane in Medal of Honor!”  or “Oh yeah!  The Cold War, like in Call of Duty!”  Usually, when they tell teachers to “activate prior knowledge” in students, they mean activate what students have learned in previous schoolyears or in prior lessons; nowadays, I find activating prior knowledge to mean “remind them what they saw while playing their favorite history-related video game.”

…Maybe video games should be the ‘21st Century Homework’, huh, lol

Double-Consciousness of the High School Student, 4/9/2015

I call them my kids.  Partially because I love my students dearly and would do anything for them (if I had the money).  But partially because I have to constantly remind myself who I’m dealing with.  In those moments when a young man jumps out of his seat ready to literally fight me, and he’s standing taller than I am with more muscle, more facial hair, more body odor, and more tattoos.  Or in those moments when a student’s mugshot is in the dollar paper for armed robbery or D.U.I.  Or that moment when I’m going through the Facebook photo albums of guys from my graduating class and older, and I see young ladies that not too long ago graduated high school in the club with them, drinks in hand.

When Hip Hoppers Can’t Funk With the Jazz

I didn’t know whether to put this in my ‘Here Lies Education’ section or in my ‘The Experienced Listener’ section.  Luckily, it’s my site, so I can put it in both.  I love when music and education connect…

I’ve reviewed a lot of albums during my several stints as ‘The Experienced Listener’.  Just about two weeks ago I had the pleasure of witnessing rapper Kendrick Lamar drop one of the greatest Hip Hop albums I’ve heard in years. Some are even saying it’s one of the greatest albums in music period; time will tell once the butterflies of the moment have passed.

Let’s Make a Deal: Black History Month Programs for a Fully-IntegratedU.S. History Curriculum

That’s right:  while 1954’s Brown vs. Board of Education integrated public facilities across America, in 2015, U.S. History Curriculums are still segregated.  In a 10 month school year, 1 month of Black History, 1 month of Native American History, 1 month of Latin American History, and the remainder dedicated to “the Establishment”… yeah, that’s segregation, folks.  Read it.  Weep.

Grey Damage: Why Ultra Combos II is the Best Loadout for Gen in USFIV

Lol… I said “Loadout” as if this was Halo 4.  It works tho, so I’m sticking with it; this is the way of the #SHENANIGAN.

File-GenAnimation

Anyway, I’ve managed to get the evil eye treatment when I’ve told fellow Gen players that I always use Ultra Combos II in my matches.  In my mind, it’s the most logical, sensible selection; frankly, I think people only choose Ultra Combos I for comboability and style points which, frankly, I care little to nothing about.  Put simply, Gen is an assassin; sacrificing damage for added hits is not what being an assassin is all about.   The point is to kill without warning and get the fork outta dodge before Gen dies of old age.  Not quickness of body movement; quickness of victory.

Atlanta Cheating Scandal
If you've heard about the recent jailing of 11 teachers involved in the Atlanta cheating scandal, if you're one of the people out there who is shaming these teachers as being terrible examples to our children for cheating, then you are on the outside and outskirts of an education discussion that is so much more important.  How can I put this--- you are staging a two-piece swimwear protest at a global warming conference.  Follow me.
